An Event that Changed the World: The Lightbulb

The day the lightbulb was invented to today, the lightbulb has taken action. It is used for so many things and used so many times everyday, and we don’t realize it! The lightbulb has definitely changed the world, but in more than one way.

Question 1-Is the style of the lightbulb different than what they used before the lightbulb was invented? If so, how? :

The torch, candle, and gaslight had a very different look, all looking different than each other and the lightbulb. First, the torch. Its shape is like a stick with fire on it, but it is more to just that sometimes. Sometimes, the torch is wood, but the top where it holds the fire is like a small bowl. The fire is at the top, and that is the source of light.

Next, the candle. The candle is wax with a flame, technically. The wax is in a cylinder-like shape, and there is a piece of string stuck through the wax in the middle. The fire gets lit from there to provide light.

Then, the gaslight. It is a metal enclosure with glass and a type of metal. Inside, there is a place to either put a gas, and it then provides light. a-group-of-old-gas-street-lamps-bill-hatcher

Finally, the old style lightbulb. Its bulb connects to its wooden part at the bottom of the lightbulb.

They are all different because they are all made with separate materials. But, the candle and torch make light with flame while the lightbulb make light by electricity. Lightbulbs’ styles have changed over the years, and continue to do so.

Question 2- If the style of the lightbulb in the future will be different, how?:

People are trying to find out how to improve lightbulbs and make them better than they already are. They are trying to find out how to make lightbulbs more energy-efficient. Because we use lightbulbs so much, this is an important phase we must work on to conserve energy! Another is that they are also trying to make lightbulbs help you get healthier and stronger. Researchers observe that different light colors can make us be more alert or sleepier.

Question 3- Why is the lightbulb this important?:

The lightbulbs are this important because they are safer and easier to use and get ahold of. They don’t make smoke, therefore more safe. This was also an advantage for people who have to work late, because for once, people could work at night at their jobs, in small enclosures or in an area with no natural light provided. Also, people could get around safely in their cars or buses at night without a chance of getting hurt.

Question 4- How does the lightbulb work in a step-by-step procedure?:

How the lightbulb works is that there is a filament inside the bulb of the lightbulb. It lights because of an electric current that passes through the filament. Then, the filament becomes very hot, and that provides light.Bulb-comparison2

Question 5- How has the lightbulb changed our life?:

The lightbulb has changed our lives and continues to. Without it, we would be using candles and torches as light. We wouldn’t have electronics or clocks without lightbulbs, and that would definitely make an impact! Lightbulbs are much more than we intend for them to be and are very important to our lives.

Question 6- What did people use before the lightbulb was invented?:

The torch is what the cave people used before the lightbulb, around 7000 B.C. Candles were also used before the lightbulb came out, around the timeframe of 3000 B.C. The candle and torch were both very different than the lightbulb, as the lightbulb is so much more safer. Oil lamps as well as gaslights were also used before the lightbulb came into action. All these were very dangerous because they were fueled by fire or gas, both enough to catch anything near it on fire. Flames were also included in the ‘group’ or ‘team’ of this. The flames were used to light such items as candles, torches, etc., and was, as well, a danger.

Question 7- Will we still have lightbulbs in the future?:

The answer is yes, we will. I have proof of that because engineers are planning to create different, better lightbulbs. People are now trying to get rid of lightbulbs with filaments and head more toward L.E.D lightbulbs because they are more efficient. The engineers believe these new products will come out near the 2020’s or the 2030’s. So, this proves that new,  better lightbulbs will be in the future.

Question 8- If so, how are the materials in today’s lightbulb different than in the past?:

The filament is different than in the past. It has went from carbonized sewing thread (in the beginning, and they also tried 1,200 different items till they got it right) to carbon (in the middle of the time frame) and to now, when they use fine tungsten wires as the filament. These materials in lightbulbs, even now, continue to change.

Lightbulbs are very helpful to everyone and people don’t realize how much lightbulbs really mean to them. They are an amazing feature we can use, and some do not know that the lightbulb has changed the world! They are, nowadays, used for a ton of things. We usually take lightbulbs for granted, not realizing its importance and history. The lightbulb has changed the world and continues to do so.

Info

The lightbulb was made by multiple people, but Edison was one of the commonly known inventors of it. He worked with Swan to produce the lightbulb! Humphrey Davis was the first one to create light 79 years before Edison( Who made the lighbulb in 1879). The picture below shows that information.

An incandescent lamp or incandescent lightbulb is an electric light with a wire filament heated to a high temperature, by passing an electric current through it, until it glows with visible light. This is how the lightbulb functions.

Ever since the lightbulb was invented, people could work at night! For the first time ever, employees could work through the night safely, and people could drive at night so much more safer.

Also, the lightbulb has provided so much for us, such as electronics, light at night, and some alarm clocks! We should be so glad that we have things like the lightbulb to let us do things after dark.
